Death Star World
Death Star World gathered two of Kenner’s most elaborate Micro Collection environments into a single 1982 package: Death Star Escape and Death Star Compactor. Like Bespin World, it did not introduce new underlying playset engineering. The value of the release was synthesis. Kenner took two separate scenes from the original Star Wars film and presented them as one larger Death Star experience, complete with the painted die-cast figures, mechanisms and printed materials needed to stage both the heroes’ escape and the garbage-compactor sequence. The two component sets already represented very different kinds of play. Death Star Escape used movement and destruction: an elevator carried Stormtroopers between levels while the heavy laser cannon could be made to explode. Death Star Compactor was stranger and more tactile, using its moving environment and an astonishing quantity of orange foam This is the documented first commercial issue for this territory and anchors descendant packaging, variant and reissue records.
