One brand, multiple subject Indexes
Ranney Index is designed as a family of subject-specific reference services. Each Ranney Index focuses deeply on a particular collecting, enthusiast or research subject while sharing the same core standards for evidence, independence and transparency.
The Vintage Kenner Star Wars Index is one subject membership with two connected research areas: the Production Index, covering documented retail products, territorial releases, repackaged issues, reissues and variants; and the Development Index, covering prototypes, concepts, packaging development, unreleased products and research candidates. Those two areas are parts of the same Kenner Star Wars Index, not separate memberships.
Additional Ranney Index subjects may be introduced over time. Each subject can use criteria and research structures appropriate to what it documents while remaining part of the same overall research system.
Why Ranney Index exists
Specialist information is often scattered across old catalogs, auction records, enthusiast communities, manufacturer archives, marketplace listings, private collections and decades of accumulated collector knowledge. Ranney Index brings that evidence together into organized records that are easier to search, compare and understand.
The goal is not simply to build large lists. The goal is to build useful reference records with enough context to explain why the information matters.
Quality, collectibility and value are different questions
Ranney Index deliberately separates the quality of a production item from its collector significance and its market value. A superbly designed product may not be rare. A historically important collectible may not be the best-designed product in its category. A high sale price does not automatically make an item better.
This separation is the foundation of Ranney Rank, Collector Index and condition-specific market-value research on production records. Development material is handled differently: prototypes, concepts, proofs, unreleased material and research candidates are evaluated through documentary evidence, provenance, surviving examples, historical significance, production outcome and verified transactions rather than being forced into normal retail-product scoring.
Independent by design
Ranney Index does not sell higher rankings. Advertising, sponsorship, manufacturer relationships, dealer relationships, contributor relationships or commercial pressure do not purchase a better Ranney Rank, Collector Index score or market valuation.
When evidence changes, records can change. When we find an error, we correct it. Independence is more valuable than pretending that a reference database can never be wrong.

A living reference
Collector knowledge is never completely finished. New documents surface, previously unknown variants are documented, auction results change the market picture and better historical research can correct long-repeated assumptions. Ranney Index is therefore maintained as a living reference rather than a frozen publication.
Research confidence, source quality and corrections are treated as part of the record-building process.
