RANNEY INDEX · DEVELOPMENT INDEXExplore the documented work behind vintage Kenner Star Wars toys: prototypes, concept models, proof cards, packaging development, unreleased products, internal documentation and unresolved research. The Development Index follows what existed before, around and outside normal retail production.
The Kenner Production Index catalogs toys and collectible releases that reached the market. The Kenner Development Index follows what happened before production—concepts, prototypes, packaging development, unreleased products and surviving development material.
The Production Index begins with released products. The Development Index works backward into the design process—what Kenner proposed, built, tested, changed, cancelled and documented. These records are evaluated through development history, surviving evidence, provenance, authentication and production outcome rather than being forced into normal retail-product scoring.
Physical development material such as sculpt stages, hardcopies, first shots, paint masters, engineering samples and other pre-production evidence.
Artwork, models, presentation pieces and proposed ideas showing how Kenner explored products before committing to normal production.
Proof cards, cromalins, box mock-ups, layout boards and other material documenting the creation and approval of packaging.
Documented products that progressed through development but never became ordinary retail releases in the form recorded here.
Specifications, internal records and surviving documentation that help reconstruct how products were planned, engineered and approved.
Broader proposed lines, programs and continuations that never became a normal released product range.
Claims and attributions kept explicitly unresolved while the Index records supporting evidence, missing evidence and what could resolve the question.

Umbrella development record for Kenner’s proposed 1985–86 continuation of the vintage Star Wars toy line. Surviving official presentation-binder and concept material documents a broad multi-category expansion including proposed action figures, droids, vehicles, playsets and related concepts. Individual proposed products remain listed under Concepts; this record preserves the shared line-extension program.
Umbrella development record for Kenner’s planned 1983 expansion of the Micro Collection. Surviving documentation identifies an ambitious six-playset continuation, including additional Death Star, Dagobah, Hoth, Endor and Jabba-related environments. Individual playsets and surviving prototypes remain in their appropriate Concepts, Prototypes and Unreleased Products categories; this record preserves the shared expansion program.
Boba Fett was originally developed with a spring-loaded firing rocket. Kenner produced concept models, protomolded and hand-painted samples, Toy Fair/card samples and the well-known L-slot and J-slot prototype mechanisms. The firing feature was abandoned before normal consumer release, making the rocket-firing version a distinct cancelled product-development program.
Master development record consolidating 12 catalogued development stages/artifacts for Rebel Soldier. Surviving stages identified during discovery include: Concept drawing, CROMALIN, Proof card. Individual stages are evidence within one product-development story rather than separate Development Products.
Master development record consolidating 4 catalogued development stages/artifacts for Vlix. Surviving stages identified during discovery include: First shot, Packaging layout, Painted hardcopy, Photo sample. Individual stages are evidence within one product-development story rather than separate Development Products.
Master development record consolidating 5 catalogued development stages/artifacts for White Witch. Surviving stages identified during discovery include: Concept model, Package mockup, Packaging comp, Painted concept model, Unreleased vehicle. Individual stages are evidence within one product-development story rather than separate Development Products.
Master development record for Kenner’s unreleased Ewoks Bondo action figure. Surviving evidence includes presentation artwork, head mold, painted hardcopy, painted first shot, prototype accessories, prototype collector coin and proof-card material. These artifacts document one proposed action-figure product and are consolidated here.
Master development record consolidating 2 catalogued development stages/artifacts for Unproduced Hoth Rebel Vehicle. Surviving stages identified during discovery include: Conceptual vehicle, Concept model. Individual stages are evidence within one product-development story rather than separate Development Products.
Dagobah was one of six new Micro Collection playsets Kenner planned for the 1983 expansion. Conceptual development survives, including playset material and figures of Luke, Ben Kenobi and Yoda in scene-specific poses. The entire expansion was cancelled before mass production when the Micro line was discontinued.
Kenner developed a Jabba-themed Micro environment, often identified in surviving material as the Jabba Dungeon or Boiler Room. Concept artwork, a model and Kenner photography survive from the program, but it was cancelled with the rest of the proposed 1983 Micro expansion.
In 1984 Kenner’s product-concepts team created Atha Prime as the principal villain for The Epic Continues, an internally developed vision for continuing Star Wars after Return of the Jedi. Director of Product Concepts Tim Effler adapted an unused Emperor’s Royal Guard design and conceived Prime as a calculating enemy supported by manufactured Clone Warriors. Kenner assembled a presentation of more than forty pages of concepts and pitched the program to Lucasfilm, which declined the proposed continuation.
Master development record consolidating 5 catalogued development stages/artifacts for Luke Skywalker (Jedi Knight Outfit). Surviving stages identified during discovery include: Painted hardcopy, Proof card, Protomolded figure, Unpainted hardcopy, Wax sculpt. Individual stages are evidence within one product-development story rather than separate Development Products.
Pre-production box/package mock-up for the unreleased Hoth Bacta Chamber, documenting advanced packaging development for a Micro Collection product that reached production-quality prototype form but never entered retail production.
Kenner developed a large Rebel Blockade Runner vehicle for the Return of the Jedi era. Surviving concept material describes an opening cockpit, manually operated front laser cannons, an escape pod sized for R2-D2 and C-3PO, a movable radar dish that could hold a figure, and battery-operated rear cannons and engine lights. A substantial plastic concept model survives, showing that the project advanced well beyond a paper proposal before cancellation.
Kenner considered a preschool Star Wars line modeled on the successful Treetots format. At least four chunky character figures and two vehicles were prototyped, but the Star Tots concept appears never to have progressed beyond early development. Surviving hardcopies, concept artwork and display material preserve the abandoned program, which later foreshadowed aspects of Kenner’s Ewok preschool toys.
The Apex Invader was conceived as Atha Prime’s personal craft in Kenner’s The Epic Continues proposal, with Blue-Four serving as its pilot. Kenner envisioned the vehicle docking atop the much larger Annihilator command ship, creating a linked vehicle system for the proposed post-Return of the Jedi story line. The concept remained presentation artwork when Lucasfilm declined the program.
Master development record consolidating 6 catalogued development stages/artifacts for Yak Face. Surviving stages identified during discovery include: First shot components, Hardcopy paint master, Painted first shot, Production sample, Toy fair sample, Unpainted hardcopy. Individual stages are evidence within one product-development story rather than separate Development Products.
Princess Leia Bespin Gown Large Size Action Figure is a documented cancelled Kenner large-size figure associated with The Empire Strikes Back program. It never reached normal retail production in this form. Surviving physical prototype and packaging material document an advanced but cancelled development program.
Kenner concept artwork exploring Star Wars-themed SSP van toys as an extension of the company’s SSP vehicle format.
Rendered concept preserved in Kenner’s 1985–86 line-extension presentation, making this a documented visual development artifact rather than a reported idea.
